If you have a cyclocross podcast, or any podcast for that matter, it doesn't take long before people start asking you who your dream guest would be. I think it's safe to say, this week I can put a check mark next to the first person on that list, because Sven Nys is our guest.
I am not going to insult your cyclocross intelligence with telling you about Sven Nys. You all know who he is and what he has accomplished. What I can tell you is that for all of the hard work he put in as a professional cyclist, he may be working even harder now. The guy goes non-stop. From managing the Telenet-Fidea team, to holding clinics, working the pits, washing team bikes, driving the van. He does it all.
In typical Sven Nys fashion, I asked for 30 minutes and he graciously gave me close to an hour. We have a great wide ranging conversation for the first half of the podcast, and then we get into the weeds, in the best of ways. Sven breaks down video from his final World Cup victory at Koksijde and then we talk for a bit about the 2016 World Championship race in Zolder.
For that second half of the podcast (right about the 27 minute mark) there is a video companion piece that is posted at cxhairs.com. It's basically the rest of the podcast but with video clips added for reference.

Scott, David and Bill convene for a spirited edition of They Don't Do That In Europe. We talk about China, Rochester and the upcoming Trek CXC race. I make an Alexander Haig joke nobody understands, and David makes some really bad Guns and Roses puns. It's a good listen.

We are coming at you from Vallnord, Andorra, for Crosshairs radio episode 41 during which I sit down with Simon Burney, the UCI MTB Coordinator and author of Cyclocross: Training and Technique. Simon is at Andorra to make sure everything goes to plan in the World Cup XCO race. He has a lot on his plate and it was great to have him make some time to chat at the end of a long day.
We recorded in the Trek Factory Racing XC team's camper, which is parked atop a climb, which among other things, featured in the Tour de France. Between that and the MTB World Cup finish line we could see from the window of the camper, the environment could not be better for a cycling podcast. You can hear the helicopter outside a couple times during our conversation as it evacuated fallen downhillers from the mountaintop, and a bit of other external noise. But for the most part, the traveling podcast studio did okay. Even after some early technical difficulties that had me scrambling to cobble together the backup equipment.
Simon Burney's book was the inspiration for Skills Drills and Bellyaches: A Cyclocross Primer. When I first interviewed Simon via email in 2009 I hadn't really thought about writing a book. At least not until he put that thought in my head. We had a wide-ranging conversation about MTB and cyclocross. Having worked closely with the UCI it was really good to hear Simon's insight on the rules and how they are applied in the United States versus Europe.
Thanks to The Service Course for once again sponsoring the episode. Check out the cleaning kits featuring tampico brushes available at www.theservicecourse.com. And follow along on Twitter at @sc_cycling.
